ABBOTSFORD, BC, July 18, 2025 – As part of a strategic move to extend its growing season and increase crop diversity, Van Belle Nursery has partnered with leading greenhouse manufacturer in Canada, Harnois Greenhouses, to implement a series of controlled-environment structures. In this first phase, 12 Ovaltech III freestanding greenhouses (30′ x 270′) were installed at the company’s Abbotsford facility, providing a major boost to early-season output and crop versatility.
This transition from outdoor beds to greenhouses was driven by Van Belle’s desire for greater environmental control, especially in response to British Columbia’s variable spring weather. The project was led by Andrew Plantinga, Facility Manager, and Henry Contreras, Continuous Improvement Manager, who both emphasized the importance of finding a greenhouse manufacturer in Canada capable of meeting technical and operational demands.
“Once I knew what the growers needed, I started approaching different greenhouse manufacturer in Canada, requesting technical specifications so we could compare and make the best decision,” explains Contreras.
“Harnois was ahead at every step – clearer invoices, faster turnaround times, and better availability of parts. Even if it wasn’t the cheapest option, as a full package, it was by far the best decision for us.”
From structural integrity to climate adaptability, Harnois met Van Belle’s requirements with confidence.
“We got specs on the weight rating, snow load, what the structures could handle – we needed greenhouses that could host a wide variety of crops,” says Plantinga. “Other companies hadn’t done the math. With Harnois, the certainty was there.”

The Ovaltech III freestanding greenhouse (30′ x 270′) is engineered specifically for North American climates, with a robust steel frame rated for heavy snow loads and high wind exposure, critical requirements for any greenhouse manufacturer in Canada must meet to serve growers in BC, Ontario, or Quebec. Its rounded arch profile sheds snow naturally, reducing structural stress during winter months. The polycarbonate covering delivers optimal light diffusion while maintaining thermal efficiency, allowing crops to thrive even during early spring cold snaps.
For Van Belle, the choice of a 30′ x 270′ footprint was deliberate: it maximizes usable growing surface while remaining compatible with their existing equipment and workflow. Twelve structures of this size add over 97,000 square feet of controlled growing space, a significant expansion by any measure.
“Since these greenhouses have gone up, we’ve been able to move crops out earlier in the season,” Plantinga adds.

“A lot of manufacturers can sell you a structure,” notes Contreras. “What separates a true partner is what happens after the contract is signed, responsiveness, clarity, and whether they stand behind their product.”
Harnois provided stamped engineering drawings, detailed snow and wind load calculations, and a dedicated project manager from initial quote through final installation. It was this end-to-end accountability that ultimately tipped the decision.
“These greenhouses have been fundamental in helping us solidify the growth we’re trying to achieve, especially in the off-season,” says Contreras. “We’re truly building a partnership with Harnois, and if we keep growing the way we are, we’ll continue working with them.”
